ยามาชิตะ โตโมยุกิ (山下 奉文) ฉายา Tiger of Malaya ยามาชิตะ เกิดเมื่อวันที่ 8 พฤศจิกายน 1885 ในหมู่บ้านโอซุกิ  (Osugi village) เมืองกามิ (Kami county, Kochi Prefecture) พ่อของเขาเป็นหมอชื่อซากิชิ (Sakichi) และแม่ชื่อยู (Yu) โดยยามาชิตะเป็นลูกชายคนที่สองของครอบครัว  พี่ชายของเขาชื่อว่าโฮโอ (Hoho) ภายหลังเป็นแพทย์ทหารในกองทัพเรือ นอกจากนั้นยามาชิตะมีน้องชายอีกหนึ่งคน และน้องสาวสองคน เมื่ออายุได้ 2 ขวบ ครอบครัวได้ย้ายมาอยู่ที่บ้านเกิดของบิดาในหมู่บ้านโอซุกิ มูระ (Osugi Mura) บนเกาะชิโกกุ (Shikoku island) 1905 จบจากสถาบันทหาร (Imperial Japanese Army Academy) ในเมืองฮิโรชิม่า 1908 ได้ติดยศร้อยโท และเข้าร่วมรบในสงครามโลกครั้งที่ 1 ในการต่อสู้กับทหารเยอรมันที่เมืองชานตง (Shandong, China)…
