สงครามแห่งซาฮาร่าตะวันตก ดินแดนที่เรียกว่าซาฮาร่าตะวันตก คือ ดินแดนชายฝั่งมหาสมุทรแอตแลนติด ของดินแดนอัฟริกาตะวันตกเฉียงเหนือ ถูกล้อมไปด้วย ประเทศโมรอคโคตอนเหนือ มัวริทาเนีย และอัลจีเจีย ระหว่างปี 1884 -1975 ตกเป็นอาณานิคมของประเทศสเปน สเปนอ้างการเข้าไปอารักขาเพื่อการยึดครองเป็นเมืองขึ้น สเปนสร้างจังหวัด สเปนซาฮาร่า (Spanish Sahara) ในปี 1958 โดยผนวกเอาดินแดนทาทงเหนือชื่อ ซากัว เอล ฮามร่า (Saguia el-Hamra) และดินแดนทางใต้ ริโอ เดอ โอโร่ (Rio de Oro) เข้าได้กัน ซึ่งภายใต้การปกครองของสเปน ประชาชนซาฮาร่าตะวันตก ได้ลุกขึ้นสู้เพื่อปลดปล่อยตัวเองอยู่เนืองๆ ตลอดเวลา เช่น กลุ่มของชีค มา อัลเอเนียน(Shaykh ,Ma al-Aynayn) ที่ลุกขึ้นสู้กับฝรั้งเศส ในเมืองซะมาร่า ซึ่งอยู่ใจเขต ซากัว เอล ฮามร่า แต่เป็นเมืองเดียวที่อยู่ในซาฮ่าร่าตะวันตกที่ไม่ได้อยู่ภาายใต้สเปน ขณะนั้นฝรั่งเศสขยายอิทธิพลเข้ามาในดินแดนตอนเหนือของแอฟริกาตะวันตก ในปี 1902 ชีค มา…
