New record mark over Lake Vostok

New record set on Lake Vostok

Tags: Lake Vostok , Antarctic, Sci-Tech, Commentary, World, Russia Kruglova L. 25.01.2011, 19:40 The world’s deepest ice crack over Lake Vostok in the Antarctic Region has reached the 3,700 metre-mark. Russian specialists are hopeful that they will be able to “unseal” the relict lake, which is covered under the 4 km thick ice before the end of this season. They will have to cover about 50 metres to achieve their goal. This water eco-system has remained isolated from the Earth atmosphere for millions of years. Deep drilling for the purpose of conducting a paleoclimatic research has been underway near the Vostok Station since the 70s of the last century, when nobody had any idea that such a lake did exist. The great geographic discovery of the last century, as scientists say, at first, was the brave hypothesis of the Russian glaciologist Zotikov, who initially assumed and then confirmed, with the help of his calculations, that there was a freshwater sea under the Sixth Continent’s ice cover since the thawing of the Antarctic ice continues non-stop due to ice thickness. Later his calculations were confirmed by the seismic research, by pilots’ observations, and also by satellite images. The polar researches have received the data providing information about the lake’s size and form, about the thickness of its ice cover, about the underwater relief, and about precipitation. In 1998, when water was only about 130 metres away, a deep drilling operation was suspended, because the world’s scientific community became concerned over the possible pollution of the relict lake. As a result, safe technologies were worked out in St. Petersburg, and in 2005 the works over Lake Vostok resumed. In October of 2007 a new break followed when an accident occurred at the depth of 3,668 metres. Source: Voice of Russia.
