รูดอล์ฟ อาร์นไฮม์ (Rudolf Arnhiem) ผู้เชียน Art and Visual Perception : A Psychology of the Creative Eye รูดอล์ฟ เกิดวันที่ 15 กรกฏาคม 1904 ในเบอร์ลิน, จักรวรรดิเยอรมัน ครอบครัวของเขาเป็นคนเชื้อสายยิว พ่อของเขาชื่อว่า จอร์จ (Georg Arnheim) เป็นเจ้าของโรงงานเล็กๆ ที่ผลิตเปียโน ซึ่งพ่อของเขาปรารถนาจะให้ลูกชายสืบทอดกิจการต่อจากเขา จึงตั้งเงื่อนไขว่าถ้ารูดอล์ฟอยากจะเรียนจิตวิทยาเขาจะต้องใช้เวลาในโรงงานเท่าๆ กับเวลาที่ไปเรียนด้วย แต่ว่าภายหลังพ่อเขาก็ยอมให้รูดอล์ฟทุ่มเทเวลาเพื่อการเรียนอย่างเดียว ไม่นานหลังจากเขาเกิด ครอบครัวก็ได้ย้ายมาอยู่ที่เมืองไกเซอร์ดัม (Kaiserdamm) เข้าเรียนที่มหาวิทยาลัยเบอร์ลิน ในสาขาจิตวิทยาซึ่งในชณะนั้นยังเป็นสาขาหนึ่งของคณะปรัชญา รูดอล์ฟได้มีโอกาสเรียนจิตวิทยาเกสตัลต์ (Gestalt psychologists) กับนักจิตวิทยาสายนี้ที่มีชื่อเสียงหลายคนอย่าง แม็กซ์ เวอร์เทียร์เมอร์ (Max Wertheimer) 1928 จบปริญญาเอก และทำงานเป็นบรรณาธิการในแผนกวัฒนธรรมและการวิจารณ์ภาพยนต์ของหนังสือแม็กกาซีนรายสัปดาห์ Die Weltbühne ที่ก่อตั้งโดยจาค๊อปสัน (Siegfried Jacomsohn) …
